This Saturday will see Bristol’s first major gay Pride event. It follows a programme of events during the week including films, comedy and of course rather a lot of partying and socialising.
I’m really glad that at last Bristol is having a Pride parade and a full day of activities in Castle Park. Cardiff, Manchester and many other cities have staged successful Pride events for years, drawing visitors from all over the country. I hope that this years Bristol Pride will be the first of many annual events and in time it will become a popular part of Bristol’s calendar of summer and autumn weekend festivals. Of course, it’s not just for lesbian, gay and transgendered people – the festival is for all Bristolians and visitors to enjoy.
I spoke at the London Euro Pride in Trafalgar Square in 2006 in front of tens of thousands of people. As the MP for Bristol West, who happens to be gay, I will certainly be more proud to speak in Castle Park at Bristol’s first major Pride. I’m very grateful to the small team of volunteers who have given their time and put their careers on hold to make this event happen. Let’s hope it’s a great day, even if it rains!
