People in Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire should vote for the Liberal Democrats to prevent a hard Brexit and protect the local economy, Stephen Williams has said today.
The Prime Minister today (Tuesday) called a snap General Election to be held on the 8th June.
The Liberal Democrats are standing on a clear platform to prevent a hard Brexit by staying in the Single Market, and to give the British people the final say on the Brexit deal through a referendum.
Stephen Williams was joined by Tim Farron MP, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, at the Arnolfini gallery on Bristol’s harbourside on Tuesday evening, to launch the party's West of England mayor manifesto and to speak out against the government’s plans for a hard Brexit.
Liberal Democrat candidate to be the West of England mayor on 4th May, Stephen Williams, commented:
“Both the regional election on 4th May and the General Election on 8th June are a huge opportunity for voters in the West of England to change the direction of our country and prevent a disastrous hard Brexit.
“As regional mayor I would stand up for the rights of the EU nationals who live in the West of England. Over 30,000 people work in some of our key industries, such as aerospace, or in the NHS and other public services. In the two hard years ahead of us, while the government negotiates with the EU, our relationships with our closest neighbours will still be the most important, whatever the outcome of the Article 50 discussions
“People in Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset voted decisively to remain in the EU and many in South Gloucestershire did not vote for the extreme form of Brexit that Theresa May has imposed on us after being backed by Labour.
“For all those who want to protect our local economy by staying in the Single Market and ensure the people have the final say over what comes next, the elections on 4th May and 8th June are your chance to vote for the Liberal Democrats and to say no to the government’s hard Brexit.”
The Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron MP, added:
“The Liberal Democrats are the real opposition to the Conservative Brexit Government. If you want to avoid a disastrous hard Brexit. If you want to keep Britain in the Single Market. If you want a Britain that is open, tolerant and united, this is your chance.
“Labour won’t win any seats off the Conservatives. Only the Liberal Democrats can prevent a Conservative majority and only Stephen Williams can beat the inexperienced Brexit-defending Tory candidate in the regional election on 4th May.”
