Williams opens Bristol Grammar Infants School5.15.00pm GMT Wed 27th Jan 2010 Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West was given the pleasure of opening the new Infants School at Bristol Grammar School in Clifton. The day was one of the wettest in January so far, but this didn't dampen his or the children's spirits! Stephen walked the grounds with Bristol Grammar School Headteacher Rod MacKinnon where children lined his path holding balloons, which were released upon his arrival at the Infants school building. He then formally cut the ribbon and sang a specially prepared song and cut the celebratory cake. Stephen said, ""Bristol Grammar School is a part of the city's heritage and it is a privilege to be involved in part of its prestigious history." The School was founded in 1532 by wealthy Bristol merchants, Robert and Nicholas Thorne. The Thorne family served as Members of Parliament for Bristol in the 1520's and 1530's. Bristol Grammar School (BGS) is now a consistently high-ranking, independent, co-educational day school with 1,200 pupils. The BGS Upper School caters for pupils aged 11-18 (years 7-13) and the Junior School for those aged 7-11 (years 3-6).
